Metal Shops

Metal Shops for Sacramento and the foothills

A good shop gets the truck, the tractor or the project out of the driveway and gives you a place to work all year. That takes a door tall enough for what you drive in, a slab that can carry a lift or heavy equipment, power for a welder and compressor, and walls insulated well enough to keep working through a Sacramento summer. Many people also want an office, a bathroom or a mezzanine for storage. A metal shop gives you all of that with a clear span inside, a tough exterior and a roof built for foothill snow and wildfire season.

We build metal shops from our base in Cameron Park, within 75 miles: Sacramento, Elk Grove and Roseville, the foothill towns of Placerville, Auburn and Grass Valley, Lake Tahoe and Truckee, and down the valley to Lodi, Stockton and Modesto. We do the whole build ourselves. That covers the engineered plans and county permit, grading the pad, pouring the slab, raising the post frame or steel frame, the metal roof and walls, roll-up and walk doors, windows, insulation, wiring and any finished office or bath. You deal with one builder from the first stake to the final inspection.

What's included

What goes into our metal shops

  • 01

    Roll-up and overhead doors

Door openings sized for trucks, tractors, boats or a fifth-wheel, with the framing over each one engineered to carry the roof and any snow on it.

  • 02

A slab built for the work

A reinforced concrete slab, thickened where a car lift or heavy machine will anchor, and finished smooth for carts, creepers and jacks.

  • 03

    Power for a working shop

220V circuits for welders, compressors and lifts, outlets along the walls and bright lighting over the bench and every bay.

  • 04

    Office, bath and mezzanine

A closed-in office, a bathroom and a mezzanine or loft for storage, finished to the same standard we use when we build homes and guest houses.

  • 05

    Insulated for valley heat

Roof and wall insulation, ridge vents and a light roof color keep the shop workable in July. A vapor retarder stops the roof from dripping in winter fog.

  • 06

    Farm shops

Big-door shops for tractor and implement repair, with room to pull equipment all the way inside and a bench wall for parts and tools.

How it works

How a metal shop job works

  1. 1

    Free quote and site visit

Tell us the size, the doors you need and what the shop is for. A local builder calls you back, looks at the site and gives you a free quote.

  2. 2

    Layout, plans and permit

We lay out the doors, office, power and slab, get engineered plans for your snow load and seismic design, and pull the county permit.

  3. 3

    Pad and slab

We grade the pad, cut and fill on a slope where needed, and pour the slab with thickened sections and conduit where the plan calls for them.

  4. 4

Frame, close in and fit out

The frame goes up, then the metal roof and walls, doors, windows and insulation. We finish with the wiring, lighting and any office or bath.

Questions

Metal Shops FAQs

What size metal shop should I build?

Size it for the biggest vehicle or machine you plan to pull inside, plus room to walk around it with its doors open and a bench along one wall. Sidewall height matters as much as the footprint if you want a tall roll-up door or a lift. Most people who build a shop wish they had gone bigger, and adding length later is harder than building it in now.

Can a metal shop have a car lift?

Yes, if it is planned from the start. A two-post lift needs a slab strong enough at the anchors and enough clear height under the trusses to raise a vehicle all the way, so we set the sidewall height and slab design around the lift. The lift's 220V circuit goes in with the rest of the wiring.

How do you build a metal shop for valley heat and the foothills?

We insulate the roof and walls, add ridge vents and suggest a light roof color, since bare metal panels make a valley shop very hot by mid-afternoon. A vapor retarder under the roof keeps condensation from dripping on tools and vehicles on foggy winter mornings. In foothill fire zones, metal walls and roofing with ember-resistant vents fit the Chapter 7A rules, and the frame is built for the snow load at your elevation. On expansive clay or a rocky slope, the slab and pad are engineered for that ground.

How much does a metal shop cost?

Size, sidewall height and the doors set most of the cost, then what goes inside: insulation, electrical, an office, a bath or a mezzanine. Site work on a slope, rock or clay adds to it, and higher elevations need a heavier frame for snow. A bare shell and a fully fitted shop with the same footprint are very different jobs. Tell us what you plan to do in it and a local builder will call you back with a free quote.

Do I need a permit to build a metal shop?

Yes. A shop of any real size needs a building permit, engineered plans and inspections from your county, and adding power or plumbing brings electrical and plumbing inspections too. On rural parcels, setbacks, protected oaks and the distance from a well or septic field also shape where the shop can go. We handle the plans, the permit and the inspections.
