Pole Barns

Pole Barns for Sacramento and the foothills

Hay stacked under a tarp loses quality with the first rain, and a tractor parked in the open spends every valley summer cracking hoses and fading paint. Most people who call about a pole barn want plain, solid cover over something they already own: a season of hay, the equipment, an RV or a boat, a work area for the vineyard or orchard. They want it sized right, framed for the snow or wind at their site and up before the weather turns, without paying for a finished building they do not need.

Sacramento Barn Builders builds pole barns from Cameron Park, in the El Dorado County foothills, and works anywhere within 75 miles of it: ranches and ranchettes in Placer and El Dorado counties, vineyards around Lodi and in Amador, orchards and row-crop farms in Yuba, Sutter, San Joaquin and Stanislaus, and rural lots all around the Sacramento metro. We level the site, set treated posts in concrete, lift the trusses, fasten the purlins and girts and finish with a metal roof and as much siding as you want, from open sides to fully enclosed with doors.

What's included

What goes into our pole barns

  • 01

    Hay barns

Open-sided or partly enclosed hay barns with the eave height to stack with a loader or bale squeeze, and overhangs that keep rain off the outside of the stack.

  • 02

    Equipment and tractor barns

Clear bays wide and deep enough for a tractor with its implement attached, a sprayer or a flatbed, with an open front or sliding doors.

  • 03

    RV and boat covers

Tall open covers with the clearance and bay width for a motorhome, a fifth-wheel or a boat on its trailer, out of the sun that cooks roofs and tires.

  • 04

    Lean-tos

Lean-tos on one or both sides of a new barn or added to one you already have, for extra hay, firewood, equipment or shade for livestock.

  • 05

    Framed for your site

Post depth and footing size matched to valley clay or foothill rock, and trusses and purlins spaced for the snow load at your elevation and California's seismic rules.

  • 06

    Metal roof, siding and doors

A metal roof in a light color to cut summer heat, siding on as many walls as you want, and walk, sliding or roll-up doors where you need them.

How it works

How a pole barn job works

  1. 1

    Free site visit and quote

Tell us what the barn is for, the size you need and where it goes. We look at the ground, slope and access and give you a free quote.

  2. 2

    Drawings and permit

We draw the barn for your site's snow and seismic loads and pull the county permit, or file for an agricultural exemption where your county allows one.

  3. 3

    Layout and posts

We level the site, lay out the building, auger the holes and set the posts in concrete, square and plumb.

  4. 4

    Trusses, roof and walls

Trusses go up next, then purlins and girts, then the roof and as much siding as you asked for, down to the doors and trim.

Questions

Pole Barns FAQs

How much does a pole barn cost?

It depends mainly on the footprint, the eave height and how much of it is enclosed. An open-sided hay or equipment barn costs much less than the same size fully sided with doors, and the snow load at your elevation decides how heavy the trusses and purlins have to be. Site work matters too, from leveling a slope to drilling post holes through rock. The quote is free once we know what the barn holds, how big it needs to be and where it stands.

Does a pole barn here need to handle fire, snow or heat?

Yes, and which one matters most depends on where it stands. Valley barns mostly fight heat, so a light metal roof, open sides or vents and good airflow keep hay and equipment cooler. In the foothills, a barn close to the house in a Fire Hazard Severity Zone may have to meet the ignition-resistant rules in Chapter 7A, and metal roofing and siding help, while barns around Pollock Pines, Grass Valley or Truckee are framed for real snow. Keeping hay in its own barn, away from the house, is smart anywhere.

Do I need a permit for a pole barn?

Usually, yes. Most counties in the region require a building permit and engineered drawings for a pole barn, and some exempt certain agricultural buildings on farm-zoned land that meet the county's conditions. Either way the barn has to be built for the snow, wind and seismic loads at the site. We check the rules for your parcel and handle the permit or the exemption paperwork.

How big should my pole barn be?

Size it to what goes inside plus room to work around it. For hay, start from how much you store and how high you stack it; for equipment, measure the largest machine with its implement on and add space to walk around it; for an RV, check the height to the top of the roof air conditioner. We settle the bay widths and eave height with you during the free site visit.

Can a pole barn be enclosed or added onto later?

Yes, if the frame is designed for it. An open-sided barn can be sided and fitted with doors later, and a lean-to can go along either side, but solid walls catch more wind, so the posts and trusses have to be sized for that from the start. If you think you will close it in someday, tell us at the quote and we frame it for that.
